NASA: Time is of the essence to launch Mars mission

Time is precious if NASA is going to send humans to explore Mars by the 2030s, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden told participants this week at the Humans 2 Mars Summit in Washington, D.C. NASA must figure out how to send not just people, but also some 200 to 400 metric tons of equipment, including a launch pad for a return trip to Earth. "We now stand on the precipice of a second opportunity to press forward to what I think is man's destiny -- to step onto another planet," Bolden said.
