Opinion: Online maps entertaining, sometimes misleading

Online maps of the U.S. illustrating data such as music preferences and the most popular given names in each state have spread across the Internet in recent months. These maps are often eye-catching and sometimes informative, but they also can be misleading if presented without proper context, Ben Blatt writes. Ian Muehlenhaus, a cartography professor at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, says such maps may not always be useful for learning, but they frequently can be entertaining.
