U.S. dollar defies expectations

Market participants were anticipating that the U.S. dollar would strengthen this year, but it has done the opposite. Lower Treasury yields, weak reaction to the Federal Reserve's tapering and investor interest in European bonds are being blamed for the dollar's decline. For the dollar to rise, the economy would have to strengthen considerably, which isn't likely, analysts say.
