White House reports call for new Big Data rules

The White House has published two reports that propose a major shift in the government's treatment of rules and regulations relating to companies' handling of Big Data. The reports call for companies to take responsibility for using data responsibly and for protecting consumers' privacy, rather than simply informing users, in small print, of how their data will be used. "Only in some fantasy world do users actually read these notices and understand their implications before clicking to indicate their consent," one report notes.
