Key senator will not oppose Delta-Northwest merger

A key senator on Wednesday told Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines executives that he would not oppose their proposed merger. John Rockefeller, D-W.Va., chairman of the committee overseeing aviation affairs, noted that he wants strong scrutiny by the Department of Justice. The airline executives said they have no immediate plans to shrink the carrier but could not predict how the combined airline would look in the future.
