California mulls vending machine restrictions

Lawmakers in California have introduced a bill that would set nutrition standards for food and drinks sold in vending machines on state property. "Everyone remains free to purchase off-site and bring on-site whatever they want to consume, but the state will stop providing profiteers venues to sell unhealthy items to its workforce," said the bill's author, Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles). ABA spokesman Chris Gindlesperger said programs that offer education and choice are the most beneficial to adult consumers, like the one rolling out in Chicago that lists calorie counts on vending machines in municipal buildings.
