To maximize plant growth, add organic matter to soil to improve its quality, writes Deb Brown, a former extension horticulturist at the University of Minnesota. Organic matter can help store moisture in sandy soils and reduce compaction in claylike soils. Materials include dried leaves or compost, which can be added in the spring and fall, Brown advises.
