Patenting one of your products can be an expensive and time-consuming process, but there are other ways to protect your intellectual property, writes Stephen Key. Before working with someone, do your research to learn about how they have behaved in the past, he suggests. Also, consider filing a provisional patent application, and use nondisclosure and noncompete agreements to keep your ideas safe, he recommends.
