Chicago teachers take stand against common core

The Chicago Teachers Union has voted to encourage educators in the city to oppose the Common Core State Standards. At issue, officials say, is that assessments disrupt students' learning and take too much time and too many resources. Mary Fergus, spokeswoman for the state's board of education, said the standards "not only ensure that students understand the concepts but can apply them to everyday life and to their careers and in the workforce."
