Chinese texts play down embarrassing history

China recently lambasted Japan for whitewashing its wartime atrocities in a new junior high history textbook, but its own official history book for the same age group glosses over certain policy failures and key events. Since the eruption of the Sino-Japanese textbook feud, more Chinese Internet surfers have reportedly been been using software to circumvent government censors and find out for themselves the truth about their country's past.
