Study: HPV behind cervical cancer also cause of throat cancers

A study in today's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine says the human papillomavirus that causes cervical cancer also increases the risk of oral sex-based throat cancer. In an editorial, the journal also cautioned that Merck's Gardasil for treating HPV should be considered with caution in light of another study's questions about its overall effectiveness. The study questioned some of the conclusions in a report on trial results that declared the drug 98% effective.
