Precast concrete holds promise for quake resistance

Using strong pistons under the foundation of a three-story, 400-ton concrete structure, engineers in San Diego recently simulated the stresses of an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale -- and the building appeared to emerge unscathed. The $2.3 million test was part of an ongoing effort to determine whether precast concrete can help California survive the big quake that scientists say is inevitable.
