Massachusetts firm pleads guilty to 39 federal charges

Modern Continental Corp. on Friday pleaded guilty to 39 federal charges, including lying and overbilling, related to its work on Boston's Big Dig project. Prosecutors, however, dropped five charges against the now-bankrupt Cambridge, Mass., firm related to an accident that killed an auto passenger in 2006 when part of a tunnel ceiling collapsed. Modern Continental has already agreed to pay the state damages related to the ceiling collapse as well as contribute to a wrongful-death settlement.
