Officials question who will work on Las Vegas Smith Center

As construction projects become more scarce, tensions rise in Las Vegas over how much work should go to union-shop versus open-shop contractors. Some Las Vegas officials have raised concerns that the main contractor on the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, a 61-acre development project, is awarding a large amount of work to nonunion subcontractors. City officials who spoke with Whiting-Turner Contracting of Baltimore said more than 20% of subcontracting dollars have been awarded to nonunion companies.
