USDA ramps up assistance programs for rural biofuel production

The Department of Agriculture is undertaking a nationwide survey of 20,000 farms and ranches to help shape policies on renewable energy and biofuels, said Tom Vilsack, USDA secretary. "We're also focusing on trying to get business and industry rural-development programs in line to provide assistance and help for companies that are either producing or distributing these fuels," Vilsack added. The agency recently made available grant funds under the Farm Bill's energy provisions, including assistance programs for biorefineries and advanced-biofuel production.
