Standard diabetes diagnosis methods fail in those of Asian descent

Genetic markers and blood factors linked to type 1 diabetes onset are present in only 30% of patients of Asian descent, suggesting conventional tests may not be as effective in diagnosing the disease in these populations, according to a study in Diabetes Care. Researchers also said that fat deposits at the waistline may serve as better indicators of type 2 diabetes in Asians than BMI. Health care providers should be aware of the unique characteristics of Asian patients, one researcher said.
