Opinion: Hagel underscores U.S. defense of Japan

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is reinforcing the U.S. relationship with Japan and sending a clear message to China and North Korea that the two allies are working together, write Robbin Laird and Ed Timperlake, authors of a book on military strategy. "Hagel has underscored a real capability to assist in the dynamic defense of Japan, and not simply provided assurances," they write. "And in the years ahead, reinforcing the relationship with Japan will lie at the center of improving credible US and allied capabilities for deterrence and action."
