Charitable donations as damage control

Companies such as Bank of America, Wal-Mart, Wells Fargo and FedEx have all made sizable donations to the NAACP, and the donations were often made remarkably soon after the companies ran into trouble with regulators or labor groups over allegedly discriminatory policies. "It's part of every communication specialist's playbook to align clients who have particular issues with nonprofits that are strong in those issues," says crisis-communications strategist Sam Singer.
