Ban on Canadian cattle likely to go to the courts

The chairman of the House Agriculture Committee says he has no plans to intervene in the dispute between the Bush administration and American cattlemen over the importation of Canadian cattle to the U.S. Instead, a federal court in Montana will likely review the case, where the presiding judge has already been critical of measures to ensure safety of Canadian beef imports. Four cases of BSE have been found in Canada as of January, and the related loss to the U.S. beef industry is about $4 billion per year.
