Canadian health economist calls for independent government drug monitor

Steve Morgan of the University of British Columbia says Canada's spending on prescription drugs is at record levels and an independent agency is needed to study medication use and determine if newer, more expensive drugs are the best solution. Morgan says he suspects many of the people trying newer drugs first could have tried older, cheaper alternatives before being put on the more expensive one.
