Keep communication open to stop stray projects

To prevent employees from taking the initiative of moving ahead with a project that doesn't align with the priorities of the department, managers need to set up checkpoints without making workers feel like they're being micromanaged. That includes articulating the department's strategic initiatives, checking in with the team occasionally to see what they're working on and creating a culture that allows employees to feel comfortable in coming to you with questions.
