Data are painting conflicting pictures of the state of the economy as the chasm between big businesses and small continues to widen. "The steep recession will unlikely be followed by a steep recovery; the numbers just aren't moving in that direction," said NFIB Chief Economist William Dunkelberg. NFIB's monthly small-business optimism survey is due out Tuesday. Dunkelberg said that in April, 14% of respondents said they planned to add jobs, down one percentage point from March.
