Cellphone firms join feds for mobile early-alert network

AT&T, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless are joining with the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to support a location-based emergency-services network, called PLAN, that will be capable of providing early disaster warnings to people across the U.S., beginning with New York City and Washington, D.C., by year's end.
