Why students should take ownership of college planning

Students -- not parents -- should make most college-planning decisions, such as where and how to apply, according to author, consultant and former college-admissions dean Peter Van Buskirk. He writes that college planning is most successful when parents cede ownership of the task to students. Van Buskirk argues that the experience can empower students, who can impress college-admissions personnel with their confidence and direction.
