T-Mobile posts improved results as MetroPCS merger report emerges

T-Mobile USA reported better-than-expected first-quarter results today, and a published report said the Deutsche Telekom unit was discussing a merger with prepaid carrier MetroPCS Communications. T-Mobile's operating income grew 7.2% from a year earlier, and in losing 248,000 contract customers, the carrier improved significantly from the previous quarter and the year-earlier quarter. At International CTIA WIRELESS®, Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray defended the carrier's network performance even as it is moving to upgrade to Long-Term Evolution technology.
