Schumer torn over adding LGBT language to immigration bill

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., this week filed two amendments to a pending immigration-reform bill that would add language recognizing same-sex couples, but Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he worries that the addition could sink the entire effort, something Republican lawmakers have threatened. One of Leahy's amendments would recognize the legal marriages of same-sex couples for purposes of immigration law, while another would create a new "partner" category.
