Thyroid disease testing in pregnant women urged

Thyroid specialists are calling for stepped-up testing for thyroid disease for women who are at risk for the disease before they conceive or early in pregnancy. Experts say many women at risk for thyroid disease are being missed, while studies have shown hypothyroidism in pregnancy can increase the risk of having children with lowered IQs, even if the mother has no symptoms, because thyroid hormones are important for brain development.
