2 companies announce chemical plant closures, cite weak demand

Citing the toll that weak demand has taken on the chemical industry, Hexion Specialty Chemicals and LyondellBasell Industries have announced they are cutting back chemical production. Hexion said it will idle indefinitely a Deer Park, Texas, plant that annually produces 190 million pounds of bisphenol A, but will restart another BPA plant that has been down for maintenance. LyondellBasell is closing a Texas plant that makes 480 million pounds of high-density polyethylene per year.
