Telemedicine holds promise for stroke treatment and care, experts say

Using telemedicine tools to treat stroke patients works as well as bedside examinations and can allow people in rural locations and other hard-to-reach areas to consult specialists about the disease, according to a scientific statement from the American Heart Association. Boosting Medicare payments for telestroke evaluation as well as increasing the deployment of telehealth systems in areas where on-site expertise is inadequate are necessary to maximize the benefits of the technology, an AHA expert said.
