AVMA backs national efforts to address veterinary shortages

The National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense has launched a program designed to prepare high-school students for careers in veterinary medicine. Endorsed by the AVMA, the program hopes to recruit more students to fill a shortage of veterinary paraprofessionals. A separate program administered by the USDA offers a loan-repayment program for veterinarians who agree to practice in rural areas.
