BP to use methanol in oil-spill containment

The Environmental Protection Agency has allowed BP to use methanol to stop the development of crystallized gas hydrates as the company strives to contain the Gulf of Mexico oil leak, CEO Tony Hayward said. BP failed last week to plug the leak with a large dome because crystallized gas hydrates formed inside of it. Methanol is commonly used as a de-icer.
