Colonoscopy is still golden for colon cancer detection

Mayo Clinic researchers said colonoscopy has a fourfold advantage over flexible sigmoidoscopy in finding left-side colon cancer in older patients. Differences in bowel preparation, frequent lack of use of sedating medicine in sigmoidoscopy and the fact that sigmoidoscopy doesn't cover the whole colon were cited as possible factors in the procedure's poorer performance, researchers said at a gastroenterology conference.
