Analysis: Southwest Florida supermarket shoppers could see "Darwinian" change

Five major supermarket chains are represented in southwest Florida, but that number could fall as some competitors bow out of markets they say are not profitable. Winn-Dixie Stores, which announced store closings and layoffs recently, says it will close its Sarasota distribution facility, and one industry analyst says Albertsons may exit Florida altogether. Tim Hammonds, resident and CEO of the Food Marketing Institute, said "Darwinian change" is affecting the industry, adding "only the fastest and fittest will survive."
