Study links gene to pre-eclampsia

Researchers who conducted a study on mice found that deficiency in the catechol-O-methyltransferase gene reduces the levels of the metabolite 2-methoxyestradiol, which in turn leads to pre-eclampsia -- the lack of oxygen in the placenta. The finding may help in the development of a test that would identify women at risk for the condition, the researchers said.
