Bill seeks to regulate options for school vending machines

The U.S. Department of Agriculture would oversee the food sold in school vending machines under legislation proposed by U.S. Sens. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska. Meals served in school cafeterias already are federally regulated, but some say too many students are opting for unhealthy foods and drinks sold in vending machines instead of healthy school meals.
