Washington governor signs legislation for replacing Alaskan Way Viaduct

The governor of Washington state this week signed legislation that will allow the state to replace the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle with a $4.2 billion deep-bored tunnel. Gov. Chris Gregoire said the state can afford to build the tunnel and noted that it has a 27% contingency built into the cost. Critics of the project favor replacing the viaduct, which carries 110,000 vehicles per day, with improved transit and surface streets.
