Fannie, Freddie will get government support despite GOP opposition

A Republican effort that would have ultimately transitioned Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into private companies failed in Congress this week. The two government-backed companies submitted requests for an additional $8.5 billion in federal aid. Republicans had been pushing an amendment that would have ended government aid for the companies and let their charters expire.
