Girls in Trinidad, England excelled when learning alongside bright pupils

Two recent studies show that peer pressure might benefit female students by encouraging them to catch up with their high-achieving classmates. Male and female students can be easily influenced by underachievers, but girls respond more when surrounded by top performers. One study followed the progress of more than 150,000 students in Trinidad from sixth grade to 10th grade. Female students who learned alongside successful students passed more of their high-school exams, while the findings suggest male students passed fewer of their exams. The results are similar to those of a study completed in England.
