A Goldman settlement with SEC could top $1 billion

Settling Securities and Exchange Commission fraud charges could spare Goldman Sachs some negative publicity, but it also could cost the company more than $1 billion, according to legal experts. Speculation has been mounting that Goldman has entered preliminary talks with the SEC to hammer out a settlement. A settlement exceeding $1 billion would be the biggest in the post-Sarbanes-Oxley era.
