District works to facilitate inclusion of students with autism

A Michigan school district is implementing a new program to facilitate the inclusion of students with autism in elementary-school classrooms. Four educators from each school are volunteering as autism-team members, collaborating on guidebooks that outline classroom strategies for teaching students with autism. Their recommendations include offering sensory objects for students during teacher instruction, using social stories to help students navigate social situations, and giving students access to daily schedules to help them with transitions.
