Colo. district revamps program with focus on early language learning

The Aspen, Colo., school district plans to launch changes this fall to its world language programs with a focus on language learning in elementary schools. New standards include half hour Spanish and French classes for kindergartners and first graders and tests gauging fourth graders' language skills. "We recognized the need to improve our world-languages results, and to accomplish that, we're looking at giving the kids more exposure to world languages at a younger age," said Julia Roark, the district's assistant superintendent.
