Commentary: Western perception of palm oil deforestation misses real-life complexities

The West's perception of the palm oil industry is at odds with the social and economic dividends provided by palm oil to palm-producing nations, writes Yusof Basiron, CEO of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council. As companies commit to deforestation-free and traceable palm oil to please their western customers, small farmers in Malaysia and other countries could be the big losers, Basiron writes, adding that "deforestation has gone hand in hand with economic development." In contrast, the Malaysian government's Sustainable Palm Oil certification standard is a "well-designed solution" that reflects the complexities of the issue, Basiron writes.
