Food industry offers comments in response to FDA proposed ban on trans fats

Comments addressing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's proposal to withdraw the GRAS status of partially hydrogenated oils ranged from the apparent unanimous support of private citizens to a mixed response from the food industry. Many manufacturers expressed support of a gradual phase-out, and Schwan Food cautioned that quickly switching to alternatives could have "unintended consequences." General Mills suggested the FDA set a standard of 0.2 grams or less of industrially produced trans fats per serving.
