Agricultural biotechs to pursue patents on "climate ready" crops

Three biotech firms -- BASF SE, Syngenta AG and Monsanto Co. -- are working to secure patents on biotech crops that can withstand environmental stresses as they race to take the lead in a potentially profitable market, according to a report from activist organization ETC Group. Company officials, however, said the patent protections are necessary in developing biotech crops, which are key in resolving the global food crisis.
