Jumeirah Essex House workers strike over banquet staff tips dispute

Hotel workers at the Jumeirah Essex House hotel in New York held a peaceful work stoppage for 3 1/2 hours on Tuesday to protest what they said was $2 million in tips the hotel owes to the banquet-room staff under an arbitrator's ruling from 2007. The workers say the formula the hotel uses for devising the percentage of tips owed is flawed, while a spokesperson for Dubai-based Jumeirah Group said the company "respects the collective bargaining process and the union contract" and hopes for a resolution to everyone's satisfaction.
