Nurse practitioner ensures schoolchildren are able to learn

Pittsburgh City Schools nurse practitioner Juanita Hogan -- who won this year's School Nurse Excellence Award for the western Pennsylvania region -- is committed to keeping students healthy in body and mind, and that means doing more than seeing them at a school clinic. "When it comes to children, when we're talking about children at risk or unsuccessful, she wants to be around the table. She says 'Let's make sure there's nothing medically wrong with the child,' " said Viola Burgess, one of the principals with whom Hogan works.
