Institutional investor products will get extra SEC scrutiny

George Canellos, head of the Securities and Exchange Commission's Manhattan office, is having his staff step up scrutiny of products typically sold to institutional investors. The shift in focus comes after the financial crisis showed that sophisticated investors also need additional protections. "My highest goal has been to reorient both our examination program and enforcement program toward some areas that have not been the traditional focus," he said.
