What supports are needed for career-switchers?

The number of new teachers coming from careers in other fields has doubled over the past 20 years, but some say they feel underprepared in areas such as using technology in the classroom and teaching English-language learners, a national survey shows. Education officials are promoting alternative-certification pathways that train many career-switchers, but some say programs need to improve training in some areas and provide support for new teachers throughout their careers.
