France's Millau Viaduct is a "masterpiece"

The architectural and engineering work on the Millau Viaduct in France led the concrete structure to become "a masterpiece of daring and majesty," writes Joseph Giovannini. Engineer Michel Virlogeux partnered with Foster + Partners Architects for the bridge's construction. "We were driven by the scale of the idea and a shared passion for the poetic dimension of engineering and its sculptural potential," said Norman Foster. The bridge was designed "to look as delicate as possible, almost floating. I wanted motorists to feel as if they were flying their cars."
