Jump in U.S. retail sales surprises economists

Most economists expected a 0.3% fall in retail sales last month, after a 0.5% drop in March, but U.S. consumers increased their spending instead. Retail sales increased 0.1% in April, the Commerce Department said. The figure for core sales, which excludes cars, motor fuel and building materials, was up 0.5%.
